UPCOMING SOLO EXHIBITION · COMING MAY 2027

Indy in May

Indy in May is a body of work shaped by memory, atmosphere, pride and the feeling of home. The series looks at Indiana through the month when the state feels most alive, using the Speedway, Monument Circle, the skyline, neighborhood streets, open roads and enormous Midwestern skies as visual anchors.

The work is not only about what these places look like, but what they feel like. Dramatic weather, racing imagery, familiar architecture and local symbols turn recognizable scenes into emotional ones, carrying nostalgia, scale and identity throughout the exhibition.

All final paintings are currently in progress. The concept drawings and color studies shown here are the first visual map of the exhibition and a look inside the ideas that will become the finished body of work.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Pat Viles

Pat Viles is an Indianapolis based fine artist whose work explores people, place, memory, and emotion through portraiture and large scale painting.

Drawing and painting have been part of Pat’s life for as long as he can remember. His foundation in figurative and portrait art developed into a lifelong study of the human face, expression, light, and the subtle details that give a subject its character. His goal is not simply to create an accurate likeness, but to capture the feeling behind the image and create work that feels alive.

After building a successful career outside of the studio, Pat ultimately returned his focus to the work that had always been at the center of his life. Today, he creates commissioned portraits in graphite, charcoal, acrylic, and oil, along with large scale original paintings.

His painting style combines realism with confident, expressive brushwork, dramatic light, rich color, and visible texture. Whether painting a single portrait or an expansive city scene, Pat looks for the moment, expression, atmosphere, or memory that gives the subject meaning.

Based in Indianapolis, Pat’s current work is increasingly inspired by Indiana itself. Its people, neighborhoods, traditions, skies, architecture, and culture have become the foundation for a growing body of work examining what it feels like to call the Midwest home.

“The most rewarding part of creating art is the connection that happens when someone sees themselves, someone they love, or a place that means something to them brought to life on the canvas.”
